Telluric Telescope

(2014)

What is it?

The Telluric Telescope had as starting point the idea of designing an object that inspires or is “useful” for contemplation.

We decided to make a telescope-like object, which would randomly collect and display videos from places situated in the direction it was pointed at.

This way, we hope to achieve an interface that eliminates all cognitive barriers between the individual and the world as it is seen and recorded by people at any give point on the planet. The process of selection for the videos is governed only by

their geo-distribution, and the user navigates this by simply pointing the telescope wherever he pleases.

We chose the telescope as a signifier as it is our opinion that its mythology as a cultural object through the course of its historical development denotes exactly the state of mind we want to evoke in the user: the telescope was the very first object to give man the chance to contemplate and slowly grasp his position in the universe. We use its familiar shape to communicate the affordance of our proposed interaction.
